I know some people find driving relaxing, but I'm not one of those people - unfortunately I hate driving. However, I like the feeling of pretending to be in a car. So for anyone who misses driving or maybe wants to know what it's like for those of you who have never been behind the wheel, here is a list of songs from my personal driving playlist to help you enjoy the experience of driving without simulating actually having to be in a car.
- "All Too Good (Taylor's Version)" - Taylor Swift
"Oh, your sweet ways and my wide eyes
We sing in the car and get lost in the backcountry
Autumn leaves fall down like pieces
And I can imagine it after all these days.”
Although I hate driving, there's something about the changing leaves that makes me miss the suburban days of driving through my neighborhood. I guess that has to do with the fact that I got my driver's license in the fall, so fall reminds me of the first time I was allowed to drive alone. It could also have been because I've been listening to "All Too Well" way too much. This just feels like your typical fall song, although I wouldn't wish the same heartbreak on anyone else, unless of course you're striving for your own sad girl fall.
2. „bon iver“ – mxmtoon
“Playing Bon Iver on late night drives
My window, moon and fireflies"
Maia, better known as mxmtoon, is a master at creating songs that feel like lullabies. Her soft, soothing voice lulls me into a sense of security and makes me wish that instead of studying for my midterm exam tomorrow morning, I'd take a relaxing night's drive as well. Even though I hate driving at night because everything seems scarier and someone behind me is always trying to blind me with their high beam, mxmtoon makes the whole idea sound so romantic. I don't think Bon Iver can fix my night panics, but it's certainly nice to think about.
3. „Subaru“ – Curtis Waters
"Behind the car
And I'm hardly at home"
I'll be the first to say that this song doesn't portray driving as the most pleasurable experience. The speaker sits in the back of the vehicle and does not feel comfortable. If you listen carefully, there's a deeper meaning there, but I won't be the one to spoil it. However, I think that longing for home is something most people can relate to, and Waters' dejected voice perfectly illustrates that feeling. Maybe it's the memory of driving home from school after staying in the nurse's office. Maybe it's homesick after a long absence. While listening to this vulnerable song doesn't feel great, who says you can't be vulnerable in the back seat of a car? There's something very liberating about the idea of letting your emotions out in a car, especially when all the other songs on this list sound more upbeat.
4. "Getaway Car" - Taylor Swift
"You drove the getaway car
We flew, but we would never get far"
I feel this needs no explanation. One of the first things I did after I got my driver's license was create a driving playlist and put that song on top. I wish I was joking. Besides being my favorite placeRuf (2017), there's something about this song that gives me a visceral need to have my own Bonnie and Clyde moment. Of course, that was also a time when I was still driving 10 under the speed limit, so of course I didn't have any. At least I didn't partake in unsafe driving (although in my mind I was driving well over the speed limit, which is still just a fantasy).
5. "Driver's License" - Olivia Rodrigo
“Yes, today I drove through the suburbs
And imagined driving to your house"
It's hard to imagine that it's been almost two years since this song had everyone in an absolute stranglehold. Not only was it Rodrigo's debut single, it was a good one. She's an incredibly talented singer and the pain really shines through in this song, which is probably why everyone loved it so much. I don't think I've ever felt them hurt, but I was partly inspired by Rodrigo to get my driver's license. I had been slacking off with my hours but then this song came out and suddenly everyone was posting their licenses and I thought it was about time. Also, I'm Rodrigo's age and suddenly felt very behind when she dropped that song. But regardless of the cultural relevance, there's just something about the feeling of going home that appeals to me. This text was even good enough to become the title of Rodrigo's Disney+ documentary, driving home 2 u (2022).
6. „Tokyo Drifting“ – Glastiere, Denzel Curry
"I'm back to my bullshit like Jordan was to Pippen
If that's my life, then I'm floating in Tokyo.”
no This isn't "Tokyo Drift" by Teriyaki BoyzThe Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)Soundtrack. While not quite as popular, Tokyo Drifting is still quite iconic and evokes a similar sense of wanting to do some reckless driving. Glass Animals' distinctive instrumentals with heavy percussion and sound effects always have me jamming in the car. I like to pretend it's my very own soundtrack, which makes me feel cooler than I am even when I'm not driving the streets of Tokyo and instead just obeying the speed limit to be the safest driver I can be can. This song allows me to enjoy the thrill without recklessness.
7. "Story of my life" - One direction
"The story of my life, I'm bringing it home
I ride all night to keep her warm.”
This is a classic. Now, in middle school, I was trying to be "not like other girls," so I didn't appreciate One Direction in their prime (instead, I hated that they were edgy, which is so terrifying now). But when the pandemic hit and I was stuck at home, I wanted to listen to new old music. Needless to say, One Direction ultimately won me over (and I ended up in the top 0.5% of listeners of 2020 on Spotify). This song evokes exactly what they sing about: warmth. This text could be a hint that some cars take a while to warm up, especially when it's cold outside, but it could also mean that the time they spend together while driving keeps the muse warm inside holds. Anyway, when I hear this song, I'm transported to a mountain road (I'm not sure why I chose that landscape, but just ride along) while driving desperately to save myself from the cold. I've never had to do this, but it's still fun to imagine.
8. "Little League" - Conan Gray
"I swore we'd never move away
But now I drive 95 on the Autobahn.”
Although this song focuses primarily on the dangers of growing up, driving away from home is a rite of passage in itself. Gray mentions that he was speeding on the freeway to move away, presumably from his old house. This may or may not make sense to some (since the Georgetown campus is only an hour or less from my home in Maryland, I still don't think I didreallymoved away from home). Still, I can't decide if that 95 mph speed sounds exhilarating or scary - probably both. Disclaimer, do not attempt this at home. Gray has a passport because his home state of Texas has one of the highest speed limits in the US at 85 miles per hour. The highway is very close to his hometown of Georgetown (the one in Texas, not here).
9. "REAR VIEW" - ZAYN
"I never doubted myself, but I doubted you
I'm tired of looking at myself from my rear view."
The true meaning of this track relates to Zayn Malik contemplating past figures in his life and his old self and therefore constantly looking at the back view. But even if driving is not the primary focus of this song, I still find this song important because I, too, constantly look in my rear-view mirror in the car while driving. I think the movement of looking behind me is both metaphorically and literally one and the same. Malik's silky smooth vocals also help relieve any stress I feel while driving, even when I end up seeing a car hit me from the rear.
