Port Everglades Fort Lauderdale, the world's largest cruise terminal serving two of the world's largest and most revolutionary cruise ships, officially opened at Port Everglades on Friday, Nov. 6, one week before the arrival of Royal Caribbean International's 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas. Terminal 18 with Oasis,

"We completed construction of Cruise Terminal 18 on time and under budget, which is the best demonstration of government," said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen. Port Everglades, located in the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach, Florida, is managed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. "There may be larger terminals that handle two ships at a time, but Terminal 18 is designed specifically to handle one Oasis-class ship at a time."

At 240,000 square feet (5.5 hectares), Cruise Terminal 18 is more than three times larger than it was just 22 months before it opened when Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) has reached an agreement with Broward County to homeport both new Oasis-class ships at Port Everglades. The second Oasis-class ship, Allure of the Seas, is scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades in late 2010.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of CEO Phil Allen and his team at Port Everglades to create a world-class facility that will provide our guests with a seamless experience," said Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Adam Goldstein. "Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas will offer guests an unprecedented vacation, and Terminal 18 is an integral part of that offer.

Despite its size, Cruise Terminal 18 is designed to allow guests to check-in and prepare to board the ship in just 15 minutes,

Typically, guests from Port Everglades cruises who arrive early must wait outside the terminal until US Customs and Border Protection disembarks guests from the previous sailing. Since boarding and disembarking take place in two separate areas of Cruise Terminal 18, early arrivals can be processed for boarding at the same time as disembarkation. The goal is that once the ship has been approved for boarding, the transition of guests from the curb to the ship can be completed in 15 minutes,

ThePort Evergladesthe guest disembarkation terminal area is 102,000 square feet over two levels, while the arrival hall in the new cruise terminal 18 is 138,000 square feet over two levels.

Cruise Terminal 18 is actually two buildings combined with a 16,500-square-foot baggage screening area in the center that will serve both the boarding and deplaning sides of the facility. The terminal is designed so that passengers who board and arrive early can begin the boarding process and relax upstairs while guests from the previous cruise collect their luggage and continue through customs. After US Customs and Border Protection clears the ship for boarding, waiting guests may proceed to board the ship,

Inside the boarding area, guests will be guided through the boarding process by monitoring more than 157 flat screen televisions advising guests where to proceed by cabin number and what documents they should have ready. The boarding area has 90 check-in counters, more than any cruise terminal in the world

Upon returning to Port Everglades, guests will find their luggage separated by cabin numbers, as opposed to the typical color-coding process. More than 70 digital screens in the nearly two-hectare baggage hall display cabin numbers that guide guests to where their luggage is waiting. US Customs and Border Protection has a state-of-the-art surveillance and inspection area within the terminal and 22 processing desks.

While the goal is to move guests through the terminal quickly so they can begin their cruise vacation, those who arrive early will be able to relax on the terminal's upper level with seating for up to 3,000 passengers.

Once there, they can charge electrical devices and stay connected via free wireless internet access.

Children will be able to have fun even before boarding with a colorful playground inside the terminal. The playground is ADA compliant and can accommodate 75 children from toddlers to teenagers. Activities include a two-level slide, Moonwalk, Twist N' Tangle, Cave Crawl, Roller Squeezes, punching bags and more. There is a special foam-lined section for toddlers with activity boards and giant foam toys for rolling and hugging

To efficiently serve the world's largest cruise ships, Port Everglades has installed two new flexible, custom-designed folding mobile liftgates and a fixed gangway (attached to the building) at the CruiseTerminal 18 Terminal 18 loading bridges built by FMT of Sweden.

The gateway's main features are the flexibility to serve different altitudes and horizontal locations of cruise ship gates and cruise terminal entrance locations along a fixed track, as well as safer handling, speed and operation using computer-controlled equipment. They are computer controlled and will automatically follow the ship's movement if affected by fluctuations in tide, wind and waves. The gateways are connected to the port's data network via a modem for remote online maintenance and are reliable in operation with two independent power sources,

To increase passenger comfort, these new aisles have walls of tempered safety glass, providing a more open environment with daylight and better orientation for boarding and disembarking passengers. The sheds are built to meet new South Florida regulations, which require greater wind resistance, stronger construction and greater operational stability in windy conditions. The new section of the terminal is designed to withstand hurricane-force winds of 150 miles per hour

Terminal 18 is located in the center of Port Everglades directly on the port's main thoroughfare. It is separated from the other cruise ship terminals so that vehicle traffic to and from the terminal is isolated and can proceed unhindered. The intermodal transportation center will have separate entrances and traffic routes for buses, trucks, taxis and cars so that vehicles can move smoothly and quickly to pick up and drop off guests and groceries. Sixteen buses can park at a time, which is more than double the bus space at any of the Port Everglades cruise terminals. In addition, there are more than 1,000 parking spaces within walking distance of the terminal,

Shades of green with blue accents represent the sea and sky on the exterior of Cruise Terminal 18, while the interior is bathed in natural light through a 4,000-square-foot skylight in the center and a massive window at the entrance. The skylight consists of opaque panels designed to allow diffused natural light into the main open area. Natural lighting from the skylight reduces the amount of artificial light needed for electric lighting. And because the panels are opaque, the same amount of natural light illuminates the terminal regardless of whether the conditions are sunny or cloudy outside.

Renowned international artist Michele Oka Doner has been selected through the Broward County Public Art and Design Program to create an artwork on the center floor of the new terminal at Port Everglades titled "Forces of Nature." According to the artist, the beautiful dark green and blue terrazzo matrices on an area of about 3,000 square meters contain a lively narrative. The composition in the floor consists of two arenas of focus. The wider part of the footprint shows an eight-foot-diameter sphere in cast bronze spinning. The sphere is energized by intertwined longitudinal and transverse lines. The movement is enhanced by large waves of mother-of-pearl toppings that simulate the trade winds that circle the Earth. Mother-of-pearl aggregates vary in color - white to pink and silver, size and proportion, adding a kind of cosmic delight. In the narrower part of the bottom, ocean currents take on a sense of motion that begins with a spinning globe, carried by the winds, resulting in a wave-like pattern. Successive undulating lines, executed in excellent aggregate, delineate a new area, approximately 25 feet in size. This area contains a nursery of approximately 200 units depicted in cast bronze. The forms are drawn from actual seeds from the multitude known to float far and wide in the currents. The seeds range in size from 6 to 20 inches and reveal an extraordinary variety of textures, patterns and shapes. The composition is entirely energetic and dramatic, a work of art that tells about the journey through the wind, currents and finally boarding the ship

Oasis of the Seas is expected to gross $6.2 millionPort Evergladesin the following year, arising from maritime services and passenger fees. The total economic impact of the 292,000 passengers sailing Oasis of the Seas this year is expected to exceed $266 million and generate nearly $9 million in state and local taxes

An economic impact study conducted by Martin and Associates as part of the Port Everglades Master/Vision Plan predicts that by 2012, the fifth year of the 10-year agreement between Broward County and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) on Home Port About 8,012 jobs will be supported at Port Everglades for Oasis-class ships and other RCL brands. These jobs are projected to generate $356.5 million in personal income and $32.8 million in state and local taxes

In addition, the study predicts that more than 1,414 new construction jobs will be created as a result of the Cruise Terminal 18 expansion

Port Everglades Cruise Terminal 18 required 62,572,500 pounds of concrete, weighing 782 18-wheel trucks; 33.3 miles of pipeline; and 153 miles of wire, which would stretch from Fort Lauderdale to Key West,

In February 2009, construction workers lifted into place one of the world's largest tilting wall sections - a 324,000-pound concrete section that serves as the main entrance to Cruise Terminal 18. The 45-foot-wide, 57.6-foot-tall section of the wall, which is shaped like a louvre to provide a canopy for guests and natural lighting inside the building, it was lifted from the mold by two cranes that moved in sync - slowly and carefully. Florida-based Tilt-Con Corporation built a section of the wall, estimated to be the second heaviest section of tilt wall in the world,

The Broward County Department of Public Works Department of Seaport Engineering and Construction led the wayFort Lauderdale Cruise Terminal18 construction project. This Department designed, planned, scheduled and successfully implemented the project beginning in September 2007. The general contractor was Hewitt-Kier Construction Inc. and the architect was Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. Additional subconsulting work was completed by Hammond & Associates, Inc., Lakdas/Yohalem Engineering, Inc. and Cordova Rodriguez & Associates, Inc,

The cost of the expanded Cruise Terminal 18 is estimated at $75 million, although the final cost is expected to be lower. The cost will primarily be covered by increasing the number of passengers for whom Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. guarantees to sail to and from Port Everglades for a period of 10 years, with guaranteed passenger numbers quintupling in the first five years. agreement with Port Everglades. This guarantee covers passengers sailing from Port Everglades on all RCL branded ships including Celebrity and Azamara. As part of this agreement, RCL will reimburse Port Everglades for 89 percent of the expansion costs
