More Westchester restaurants are open: 14 to check out and 8 more in the pipeline (2023)

Flipping and reinventing has been the modus operandi for many chefs and restaurant owners since the pandemic began. And while the Hudson Valley has seen its share of closings—we've counted close to 30 since March in Westchester and Rockland—there are just as many openings; 37 by our count with more on the way.

Climbing Wolf, Dobbs Ferry

Beer and coffee, along with other treats, are on tap at this new family-run beer bar and bottle shop run by brothers JB and Chris Gomez. Open since October 10, the cafe/bar offers coffee from Onyx and Mighty Oak Coffee roasters, along with a variety of draft beer bottles and cans to take away, with a focus on independent breweries. There are also pastries from Croton Baked by Susan and Balthazar, as well as sandwiches and veggie chili from Dobbs Ferry's Sweet and Savory. Indoors only.

Flame Asian Bistro, Yorktown Heights

What was Stone Rose Steakhouse & Sushi Lounge in the Jefferson Valley Mall is now Flame Asian Bistro. It is from the same owners, but has a new menu with lots of sushi and sashami. It was opened at the end of September.

Gustico Latin Kitchen, Yonkers

Latin American food is at the heart of Gustic, which opened in October. 7, with dishes such as Camarones a la Parrilla (mixed meat platter), Sopa de Camarones (shrimp soup), Espagueti con Pollo (spaghetti with chicken), Bistec en Salsa Roja (steak in red sauce) and two types of paella (seafood and Valencian style). It's mostly takeout with a few indoor seats.

Long Island Bagel café, Scarsdale

This new bakery, which offers more than 30 types of pastries, including low-carb and gluten-free options, opened on August 18. Although it is a franchise, it is owned by White Plains resident Mike Stern. It is the first LIBC in Westchester, although another is in talks to open in the county. Bagels are hand-rolled New York style and baked fresh daily. You'll also find breakfast wraps, coffee, sandwiches, paninis, salads and more.

Osteria Padre Pio, Mamaroneck

This Italian joint, open since September 20, has indoor and outdoor table seating. Expect handmade pastas like penne vodka and ravioli, as well as entrees like chicken parmesan, salmon and pork chops, along with salads and entrees.

Paulie's, Katonah

This grab-and-go store is all about convenience. Owner Paul Sussmann opened on August 27 with the goal of giving the community a place to get a little bit of everything. This means coffee, fresh daily pastries, chips, cookies and other snacks. There are also sandwiches, Bread Alone organic and Zurros Italian bread products, groceries, newspapers and a walk-in beer fridge called a "cave".

Rebecca's café, New Rochelle

This family cafe, open since September 27, specializes in Mexican street food, especially from the state of Puebla. On the menu: Chiles Rellenos, enchiladas and fajitas. Indoor furniture only.

Saw Mill Pizza, Dobbs Ferry

Charlie Amchir, owner of Saw Mill Tavern in Ardsley, opened this classic pizzeria on September 3rd. The "New York-style pizzeria" has a "crispy crust that doesn't break" and serves a variety of pizzas, pastas, calzones, wedges and pastas. It's mostly take-out with a few self-service tables inside and outside.

Blind pig from Westchester, White Plains

This bar isn't new, though it still qualifies as new—it opened last December—but what's new is the food menu, which includes beets five ways, Wagyu sliders, beer-battered fish tacos, beef tenderloin and confit ravioli. of duck, among other dishes. All pair well with inventive speakeasy cocktails like the "One Night Stand," (Tito's Vodka, St. Germain, homemade blackberry puree, lemon and a sprig of mint) and the "Overruled" (this place is near the courthouse), made with Elijah Craig small batch bourbon, Demerara gum syrup, Fee Brothers Black Walnut bitters and Angosturabitters.

Grk, Harrison

Chef/owner Constantine Kalandranis rebranded 273 Kitchen into something more fun and casual, designed for the way people eat now. That means a lot of small plates (meze) meant for sharing (and good for taking out). Many of the dishes are similar to those he had at 273, only smaller—think creamy fava hummus, caramelized cauliflower and sunflower seeds, goat's milk feta croquettes, freshly shucked oysters and Spanish octopus.

The interior has also been revamped with a new mural of an octopus on the wall (holding a martini), a colorful turquoise banquette (which Kalandranis calls "Greek blue"), new tiles and new tables for easier cleaning. There is also a new ventilation system, as well as external heaters. The restaurant, which has never closed, officially opened on October 14 and offers dinner only with lunch to come. For those also familiar with the chef's Nyack restaurant, 8 North Broadway, it too has been rebranded and is also called TheGreek-ish.

King Crab, White Plains

Open since September 8, this restaurant is dedicated to the Louisiana seafood cooking experience. That means lots of sauces—think Cajun, lemon pepper sauce, garlic butter, and the restaurant's special spices—for a varied offering of shrimp, clams, mussels, and crab. The menu also includes po'boy sandwiches and sandwiches.

Ardsley Shop, Ardsley

Ardsley residents Michael and Susy Glick took over the former Stars Bagels & café Deli in January, but have just relaunched The Shop Ardsley to offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner service (indoors only) began on October 7.

This hybrid restaurant offers just about everything—coffee, smoothies, and bagels (they've retained a 15-year veteran bagel maker)—to a full American menu of soups, salads, appetizers, and entrees. Most popular so far: Grilled chicken made in-house. Other items include country fried chicken, yellowfin tuna and chicken parm.

Kuhinja OXBox, Mount Vernon

Caribbean and fusion cuisine, including oxtails, rasta pasta, curry chicken and New York strip steak are among the choices at this takeout spot. Mount Vernon native (and owner/chef) Steven Carrington rented out the kitchen before opening his own space on August 7 and has two tables outside.

  • Bagels by Sofiain Larchmont is slated to open around Oct. 17 and will feature 11 different types of homemade pastries and 11 different types of cream cheeses along with sandwiches, fresh bread and more. 145 Chatsworth Ave.
  • Broccoli's Luncheonetteshould open in the next few weeks at 23 Cedar St. in Dobbs Ferry. The new takeout spot, owned by The Rare Bit's Scott Broccoli, is all about quick meal options like mac and cheese, chicken strips, burgers, salads and vegan options. Lunch and dinner will be part of the menu starting with breakfast to be added later.
  • kava roadin Scarsdale is moving to what is now Cooked & Co, at 128 Garth Road, by mid-November.
  • Restaurant and pizza Chazz Palminteri– that that Chazz Palminteri (he happens to be a Bedford resident) – will take over what was Anthony's Coal-Fired Pizza. The restaurant will offer thin coal-fired pizzas, along with other Italian specialties, and should be open sometime in November.
  • Christopher's Chef Joewill open in Larchmont in late October at 2382 Boston Post Road where La Riserva and, briefly, Route One were.
  • Owners behindColombian Housein New Rochelle is opening a second location in the old Sofrito space at 175 Main Street in White Plains in late November.
